Design trends: folding toilet to increase space and reduce water consumption
This toilet was designed by two British students – Elliott Whiteley and Gareth Humphreys as their final year project whilst studying Product Design at The University of Huddersfield.
The “Iota Toilet” folds in after use and consumes 50% less water than a standard toilet. Apart from water saving, it is also much smaller, so it can fit into small washrooms and its rimless design makes it easy to clean.
The Iota is also far more efficient than standard toilets, using just 2.5 litres of water per flush, compared to 6 litres for an average toilet; in a typical use it could save up to 10,000 litres per person, per year.
Although it is a concept design at present, Elliott Whiteley and Gareth Humphreys have already submitted a patent application. In the meantime, Iota has entered into the “Re-Invent The Toilet” competition by RSA Student Design Awards for the best toilet re-design using a people-centred design philosophy, considering long-term sanitation issues and improving people’s lives.
